Epigenetics – it’s not all in the genes.

Epigenetics – it’s not all in the genes.

Venues: Cairns B1.031 linked to Townsville 145.030

Determining the molecular mechanisms and pathways behind pathology is essential in the understanding and treatment of disease. Exploring molecular pathways involves looking at not only the genes and proteins but also how these genes are regulated. The way in which gene expression is controlled and inherited without causing a change in the DNA sequence is known as epigenetics. Studying epigenetics and its relevance in disease is at the forefront of modern science. Especially with the potential of epigenetics to be transgenerational and with research taking place into pharmacoepigentics making epigenetic research a controversial and yet innovative area of research. This seminar will highlight the importance of using techniques that explore epigenetic mechanisms and why it is at the forefront of modern science today.
