Tuberculosis (TB) is a persistant infectious disease in Solomon Islands. Malaita province has one of the highest rates of TB in the country. Atoifi Hospital, on the remote east coast of Malaita faces many social, cultural, resource and geographical challenges when providing TB services.
This seminar reports on current operational research that is producing evidence to directly inform fundamental changes in the way TB services are delivered. TB services are now more responsive to the local cultural setting and more able to engage with the local community.
These changes aim to improve the case detection rates and treatment completion rates to prevent the development of drug resistant TB in this setting.
