AITHM Seminar - Viral Genome Sequencing and Discovery using the Illumina Mi/HiSeq Platforms

06 December 2017, 2:00pm - 06 December 2017, 3:00pm

Dr John Pettersson

Time: Wednesday, 6 December 2017, 2pm

Venue: Cairns room A001-016

Currently, I am a postdoc at Sydney university, funded by the Swedish research council FORMAS, researching the 'Australian virome' as well as investigating the role of potentially unknown pathogens in patients with fevers and encephalitis with unknown aetiology. I also work as a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, focusing on develping next-generation sequencing lab and bioinformatic pipelines for virus sequencing (in particular viral hepatitis). Before this, I completed my PhD in Uppsala university in 2014 on ticks and tick-borne diseases as well as virus evolution.

My main research interests relates to viruses and virus evolution, spread (historic and current) and their ecology in realtion to their vectors and hosts. I am also intersted in factors that shape virus diversity and what drives their emergence. This interest has led me to work with molecular epidemiology and evolution in particular. I have aquired good knowledge and experience in both laboratory work and bioinformatic analyses realted to next-generation sequencing protocolls and tools, as well as virus sequencing and analysis.
