AITHM James Cook University

The Molecular Allergy Research Laboratory, headed by Prof Andreas Lopata is located at James Cook University in the Townsville Campus. Through our research, we try to address different challenges posed to human health and well-being caused by allergic and immune related diseases.

Our primary focus is on the characterisation of food allergens with the aim of improving current diagnostic platforms and developing novel strategies for immunotherapeutic approaches for food allergy.

Our research encompasses a wide range of topics from diagnostics, therapy, occupational health to allergen labeling, epidemiological studies and patient management.

Located at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine, we run a state-of-the-art PC2 facility that includes access to protein purification suites, clean animal house, equipment for immune-chemical analysis of proteins and peptides as well as tools for molecular cloning and recombinant protein production.

We have a team of 10 members involved in the management and execution of various research projects in collaboration with more than 10 national and international partners including Universities and research institutes, government bodies, industry partners and hospitals.
